Triage & crisis management: The way of the graduate student

Triage usually refers to something that takes place in a medical environment, but it is also applied to students in graduate programs and professionals with a lot of responsibility and little time to make a decision.

It’s the idea that when you’re in an emergency or urgent situation, you have to group (in the case of the medical environment) patients based on the severity of their injuries and the likelihood of their survival.

In graduate school and in urgent professional situations, it’s about dealing with the most urgent things first.

It’s kind of like the common maxim “first things first”, but that statement fails to capture the high-stress situation that is graduate school.
